White Fillings

A common procedure that Frank Maratta, DMD performs at his New Haven dentist office is filling cavities. In the past, fillings were dark in color because they were made from a metal, like gold or silver amalgam (mostly mercury mixed with other types of metals). Nowadays many patients ask for white fillings instead of metal-colored ones. Find out more about getting white fillings and their many benefits.

Cavity Fillings

Fillings are used when a patient has a cavity, which is a hole in the surface of the tooth that can lead to infection. The filling material protects the tooth from food and bad bacteria that can cause dental problems. After a cavity filling, the tooth will usually remain protected for many years, as long as the patient commits to good dental practices and regular visits to Dr. Maratta’s New Haven dentist office.

White Fillings

Many patients don’t like the appearance of metal fillings (they are often noticeable when you smile, talk or laugh) so they specifically request “white” fillings that are tooth-colored. White fillings are either made of porcelain or composite resin material. The dentist carefully evaluates your teeth and picks the shade that is closest to your natural tooth color. When the filling is applied, it’s virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the tooth’s enamel.

Benefits of White Fillings

One of the main reasons why patients request white fillings is because they are more attractive than metal fillings. They are also durable (can last up to 10 years) and can absorb the pressure of biting down and chewing very well. Also, some patients simply prefer non-mercury fillings -- “white” fillings are commonly made of composite resin material, which is a mixture of plastic and glass.
