New to dentures? Here are some tips and advice for making sure your new teeth last.
Once you get your custom-made dentures from our New Haven, CT, dentist Dr. Frank Maratta you want to make sure that you care for them properly, so they last as long as possible. Caring for your dentures doesn’t have to be a head-scratcher, and once you get the routine down you’ll find that keeping your dentures clean and healthy is actually pretty simple. Here are some best practices for caring for your dentures.
Rinse your dentures after eating
After eating you’ll want to take the time to remove and clean your dentures to get rid of plaque and food that may be stuck between your false teeth. Simply run the dentures under some water to help loosen some of the trapped food.
Handle with care
Even though our New Haven, CT, family dentist prides himself on creating durable, long-lasting dentures, it is still possible to break or damage them if you aren’t careful. Just as you would handle eyeglasses or contact lenses with care, you also want to be gentle when it comes to handling your dentures.
Keep your mouth clean
Regardless of whether you have some natural teeth left or not, you will still want to brush your gums and remaining teeth twice a day to remove plaque and germs from your mouth. Don’t forget to also brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria responsible for halitosis (bad breath).
Take your dentures out at night
If you want to improve the lifespan of your dentures you’ll want to take them out at night and soak them in a denture solution. It’s important that any time you aren’t wearing your dentures that you are placing them in water or a soaking solution to prevent them from drying out, as dry dentures are prone to warping. If you have questions about how to soak or clean your dentures overnight our dental team would be happy to answer your questions or recommend certain cleaning solutions.
Visit your dentist
Even though dentures cannot develop cavities it’s still just as important for you to visit your dentist for regular checkups. This allows us to examine the health of your gums and any natural teeth, as well as the fit of your dentures. If you find that your dentures feel a bit loose, please give us a call.
