Your smile is valuable to your personal appearance, oral function and overall health, too. How can you keep it strong, bright and long-lasting? Consistent at-home and in-office oral hygiene is key to dental well-being, says Dr. Francesco Maratta at New Haven Prosthodontics. Here's what he recommends to all his patients.

Brushing, flossing, and eating

They're your responsibilities. The American Dental Association (ADA) says you should brush twice a day for a full two minutes and floss daily, too, to remove harmful deposits of plaque before they harden into tartar. The ADA also advises a high-fiber, low-sugar diet to reduce the incidence of tooth decay and gum disease. Water is an essential part of that healthy way of eating.

Seeing your hygienist and dentist every six months

The ADA advises that, too. At New Haven Prosthodontics, our hygienist, Priscilla, loves giving her patients a thorough cleaning and tooth polishing. She checks dental bite, measures and charts gum pockets, and takes X-rays as needed. Your hygienist's work allows Dr. Maratta to complete his professional examination which checks for:

  • Proper dental bite
  • Signs of decay and gum disease
  • The condition of crowns and fillings
  • Oral cancer and other health concerns in the mouth
  • Evidence of uneven and premature enamel wear

Avoiding tobacco

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that if you smoke or use smokeless tobacco on a regular basis, you double your chances for developing gum disease. Cigarettes also increase tooth decay and the occurrence of pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions in the mouth, back of the throat, and lips, says the Oral Cancer Foundation. So, if you need to quit, see your primary care physician for a supervised cessation program.

Wearing mouth guards

Some people habitually grind their teeth due to poor bite or jaw joint dysfunction. Additionally, all athletes--amateur or professional--should wear a mouth guard to protect their teeth and jaws. Ask Dr. Maratta what device is right for you.

A dental hygienist is a professional who is focused on helping you keep your mouth as clean as possible to minimize the chance of dental dental hygienistand gum disease. Regular appointments have a significant effect on a patient’s long-term dental health and wellness, and a hygienist can identify potential issues before they become serious. Find out when you should schedule visits to see a dental hygienist at the New Haven, CT, office of Dr. Francesco Maratta.

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?
A dental hygienist is responsible for cleaning your teeth thoroughly at regular appointments and helping you keep your entire oral cavity in good condition. This professional will also check your teeth and gums for the early signs of gum disease, tooth decay, or other potential concerns. A hygienist specializes in preventative dental medicine.

How Often Should You See Your Hygienist?
The American Dental Association recommends that you see your dental hygienist at least twice per year, about six months apart, for cleanings, X-rays, (if needed), and a review of your dental history. You should add an extra visit or two each year if you have had past problems with dental decay or gum disease. Knowing that you have a standing appointment with your New Haven, CT, hygienist for a dental cleaning should motivate you to want to take good care of your teeth between visits—it feels good to get a positive report.

Make Your Hygienist Proud
Between visits, adopting simple daily dental hygiene care habits will make it clear to your New Haven, CT, hygienist that you are serious about maintaining good dental health. Keep these tips in mind:

- Spend an extra minute or so brushing your teeth to ensure that you remove all signs of food residue. Use your tongue to check the surfaces of your teeth.
- When you floss, spend sufficient time in each quadrant of your mouth completely clearing food from between the teeth and around the gumline.
- If you feel or see hardened calculus forming around your teeth, make an appointment for a cleaning as soon as it’s convenient.

Laser DentistryIn modern dentistry, lasers pack a powerful punch when it comes to making dental procedures shorter, less invasive, and more effective. What does laser dentistry mean for you and your smile? Find out more about laser dentistry and the procedures it benefits with Prosthodontist Dr. Francesco Maratta in New Haven, CT.

What is laser dentistry?
Laser dentistry replaces the traditional dental drill with Biolase Waterlase, a powerful and effective dental tool which uses a mixture of air, water, and laser energy to treat dental issues like teeth decay or gum disease. Laser dentistry is vastly flexible and dentists can use the Biolase Waterlase Iplus system for anything from treating cavities to performing oral surgery. Your dentist will use a Waterlase system with a laser wand and different attachments to achieve different results and perform various procedures.

The Benefits of Laser Dentistry
The most obvious and striking benefit of laser dentistry is its ability to be virtually painless and the fact that it often does not require any anesthetic at all and, in some cases, only minimal amounts. This eliminates the wait times for the work area to become numb and the droopy, puffy after effects of local anesthesia used in traditional dental methods. The laser’s design uses air, water, and laser energy to perform procedures. The water continuously sprays over the laser’s path, eliminating any heat or dehydration and ensuring that your procedure is almost painless. Laser dentistry is less invasive than traditional techniques and has proven to have faster healing times, less bleeding, and more effective results.

Most of us are familiar with the basics of tooth decay and gum disease prevention: floss every day, and brush at least twice a day to keepflossing the teeth and gums healthy. In addition to the basics, there are a few extra steps that everyone can take to ensure the best oral health and hygiene routine possible.

Dr. Francesco P. Maratta, a New Haven, CT-based dentist, advises patients to schedule a dental exam every six months, for a check-up and professional cleaning to supplement an at home routine. Even with daily brushing and flossing, traces of food and bacteria missed by a toothbrush can accumulate between the teeth and gums, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease.

Preventive Dental Care in New Haven, CT

In order to get the most out of a daily brushing routine, dentists recommend starting with the right tools and technique. Using the right size toothbrush and bristles is very important to reach all of the teeth, and avoid irritating the gums with overly hard bristles and aggressive strokes. A brush that is not too large for the mouth with softer bristles and a gentle up and down brushing motion at a 45-degree angle is ideal to thoroughly clean the teeth, and avoid irritation. And don't forget to brush the back of the teeth and the tongue too!

Diet, Lifestyle, and Your Teeth

Like the rest of the body, everything we eat and drink has an effect on how our teeth look, and on our oral and general health. Consuming food and drinks with too much sugar, like soda and overly processed snacks and desserts, increases the risk of tooth decay. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are known to increase the risk of both gum disease and oral cancer. Choosing healthy, nutrient rich foods with sufficient vitamin D and calcium contributes to a healthy body, teeth, and gums.
